A recent Chicago Tribune story on a hit-and-run auto-pedestrian accident involving a Chicago-area teen driver and a teen victim was written with scant sense of proportion to the enormity and callousness of such events. From the headline to the story, the Tribune’s sympathetic focus was on the teen driver, and the fact that her bail was set at a high $500,000, and her family did not have the means to pay, and Cook County jail is a “tough place” for a young girl, and how she’s an honor student who’s about to attend college, and how she may deserve to be released on her own recognizance.
