There is No Place for Neglect in Illinois Nursing Homes

It is often a difficult decision to place a loved one in a nursing home. It is usually done after the facility has been well researched and relatives are confident that their loved one will receive the care that he or she needs.  However, there is always the concern that the nursing home resident will be abused or will not receive the necessary care.

The relatives of Sarah Wentworth know that nursing home neglect can be as serious as abuse.  Sarah Wentworth was an 85 year old Alzheimer patient at a nursing home in Itasca, IL.  On a cold night last February, Ms. Wentworth opened the door from the facility to the outside.  An alarm went off, as it should have, to alert staff of the danger. Heidi Leon was the nursing assistant on duty that night. She heard the alarm.  However, instead of investigating why the alarm went off, Ms. Leon turned off the alarm and went to the lounge to watch “Dog the Bounty Hunter.”  She did not check on any of the residents nor did she look outside. Ms. Wentworth died from hypothermia because she was outside in zero degree temperatures without appropriate clothing.

Ms. Leon accepted a plea deal that sentenced her to six months in jail and thirty months probation. Ms. Wentworth’s family has also filed a civil lawsuit alleging nursing home neglect which is currently pending in the Illinois courts.
