CSU seeks new trial in whistleblower suit, citing juror conduct.

Chicago State University is seeking a new trial in a much-publicized whistleblower case, accusing the jury foreman of hiding from the court his involvement in several other legal matters.

Thursday’s motion comes less than two weeks after the Tribune reported foreman Antoine Bass did not disclose during jury selection that he had been sued in a wrongful termination case brought by a relative of a Chicago State trustee.

Bass was on the jury this year that found in favor of a former Chicago State employee who claimed he was fired in retaliation for reporting alleged misconduct by top university officials. The university has been ordered to pay more than $3 million to the employee, James Crowley.

According to the motion filed Thursday, Cook County Circuit Judge James McCarthy asked the entire jury pool to raise their hands if they – or a relative or close friend – had “ever been involved in a lawsuit, or are you currently involved in a lawsuit.”  Read More
