For many kids, escalators are like rides in a theme park. It gives them a certain thrill to ride up and down this moving equipment. But is an escalator a toy? One mother would vehemently say “no”. Suzanne Dahm is the mother of a 6-year old girl who was recently involved in an escalator accident.
Suzanne told CBS News that an escalator is a serious piece of equipment that has no feelings. It will suck the foot of any unsuspecting individual who mistakenly puts his foot between the gaps. Suzzane’s daughter Madeline is just one of the many victims of an escalator accident. She had to undergo several operations because almost all her toes were badly crushed and the tendons along the top of her foot were severed.
Susan Koeppen of the “Early Show” said that many escalators are disasters that are just waiting to happen. Susan, along with her team and an escalator inspector, discovered that many escalators aren’t inspected often enough to ensure that they are safe for the public’s use. Unfortunately, there are no federal regulations on the inspection of escalators. It’s up to the states, towns and local municipalities to mandate escalators to be inspected regularly.
Escalator accidents are devastating. Although, a lot of people don’t realize the serious danger that a seemingly innocent escalator poses for many, especially little children. If you or a loved one has suffered an injury because of an escalator accident, then you should contact an Illinois escalator accident attorney to discuss your case.
