Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a new report on traumatic brain injuries.
According to the latest information provided by the CDC:
- Approximately 1.7 million people in the U.S. suffer a traumatic brain injury each year that results in death, hospitalization or an emergency room visit. This is approximately 200,000 more traumatic brain injury incidents a year over previous CDC estimates;
- Approximately 52,000 people die each year and 275,000 are hospitalized because of traumatic brain injuries;
- Approximately 30% of injury related deaths in the U.S. are because of traumatic brain injuries;
- Traffic accidents result in the most traumatic brain injury related deaths and are the second leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in the U.S;
- Falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in the U.S.; and
- A traumatic brain injury can happen to anyone. However, the age groups most likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury include:
- Children ages birth – 4;
- Adolescents ages 15-19; and
- Adults over the age of 65.
The CDC report, “Traumatic Brain Injury in the United States: Emergency Department Visits, Hospitalizations, and Death” was released on March 17, 2010 and can be obtained on the CDC website.
