With bicycle sharing providing greater access to bikes around the city, and residents having a growing interest in affordable, and sustainable ways to travel, bicycling in Chicago has never been a more popular mode of transportation.
However, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation, Cyclists are 5 times more likely than drivers to be killed or injured in a crash. In fact, a 2018 report by the Active Transportation Alliance (ATA) found that a bicyclist is killed almost every third day in the greater Chicago area. Collisions involving bicycles are often caused by speeding vehicles, failure to give the right of way, driving while under the influence, or drivers using their cellphones while driving.
These life-threatening collisions may happen in an instant through no fault of bike riders. Cyclists who find themselves in a collision or have suffered injuries while cycling as a result of someone else’s negligence may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.
