CROWN Act: Hair-Based Discrimination

Did you know that Illinois now prohibits employers from engaging in hair-based discrimination against employees? Illinois passed the Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair Act (CROWN Act) which includes protections against discrimination based on “traits associated with race, including, but not limited to, hair texture and protected hairstyles such as braids, locks and twists.” Employers in Illinois may still maintain dress codes and grooming policies, as long as their policies do not violate the Act. These protections found in the CROWN Act also extend to prohibit hair-based discrimination in places of public accommodation in Illinois.
