How to Avoid Personal Injury from a Bicycle Accident

The following is a guest post by The Kipness Law Firm:

Below are some tips to help you avoid personal injuries from a bicycle accident:

  • Get a headlight for both daytime and nighttime riding. A headlight will be visible to cars on the roadway.
  • Get a rear light that flashes and make sure your bicycle has reflectors on it.
  • Get a loud horn and use it when any car is near you. Do not try to yell or scream to alert the car.
  • Make sure your bicycle has side mirrors.
  • Do not hug the curb because there is no place to exit if a car is getting close to you.
  • Drive your bicycle at a speed that will allow you to make a complete stop without losing control of your bicycle.
  • Always use hand signals when making turns.
  • Do not share lanes with cars. Take up the entire lane.
  • Do not wear headphones or talk on the phone.
  • Do not assume that cars can see you on the road.
  • Drive your bicycle in the farthest left lane because people driving cars will not pay attention of bicycle lanes on the right side but instead will pay attention to lanes to their left.
  • Always wear a helmet and reflective clothing.
  • Follow all traffic laws and travel on wide and slow traffic streets.
  • Hire an Experienced Personal Injury Lawyer: If injured from a bicycle accident, you need to hire a personal injury lawyer. Do not talk to an insurance company before you speak with a personal injury lawyer.
