TITLE VII PROTECTION FOR TRANSGENDER PEOPLE CHALLENGED

The Trump administration is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to hold that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not bar discrimination against transgender employees on the basis of their gender identity. In a petition for a writ of certiorari filed Friday, the U.S. Justice Department asked the high court to overturn a ruling by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati in favor of a transgender woman who was fired by a Michigan funeral home after she told the owner she would be transitioning from male to female.
