Toyota Cases to be Heard in California: Why You Still Need an Illinois Attorney

Last week, the first of many important decisions in the Toyota vehicle defect cases was decided.  A judicial panel assigned all Toyota vehicle defect litigation to U.S. District Court Judge James Selna.  Judge Selna presides in the central district of California – specifically in Santa Ana.  The location was chosen, in part, due to its proximity to Toyota’s U.S. headquarters.

What This Means for Illinois Plaintiffs

While Toyota cases will be heard by Judge Selna in California, Illinois plaintiffs will still benefit from hiring local Illinois counsel.  Plaintiffs will be represented by their own attorneys despite the central jurisdiction for these cases.  The consolidation will allow the plaintiff’s attorneys from around the country to work together and organize their cases, discovery efforts, and arguments.

Types of Cases that Will Be Heard

Judge Selna will hear class actions and individual cases alleging that unintended acceleration or brake problems caused death, injury, or a drop in vehicle value.
