Toyota’s Sticky Pedals: Who Knew What and When

In recent months, Toyota has been named as a defendant in more than 135 class action lawsuits and nearly 100 individual lawsuits related to defects in its cars.  Millions of Toyotas have been recalled in 2010 and many questions have been raised about whether those recalls came too late- and whether Toyota has the necessary information to issue a recall earlier than it did.

An email released this week that was written in January 2010 indicates that Toyota was well aware of the problem prior to its recall announcement.  The first three lines of the email read:

I hate to break this to you but WE HAVE A tendency for MECHANICAL failure in

accelerator pedals of a certain manufacturer on certain models.  We are not

protecting our customers by keeping this quiet.  The time to hide on this one is over.

Last week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said that Toyota made a “huge mistake” by not disclosing these safety problems to the U.S. government sooner.
