An overturned truck caused not only a significant traffic problem in Claxton, Tennessee but also contributed to a second accident. An Anderson County Chief Deputy was officially assisting the Tennessee Highway Patrol by directing traffic in the area of the overturned truck on August 15, 2009. While he was directing traffic, the Chief Deputy was hit by an oncoming truck. He was airlifted to the hospital and suffered severe damage to both of his knees. He will require multiple surgeries and will endure a long recovery period.
The driver and passenger of the truck that hit the Chief Deputy were both arrested at the accident scene. The driver was charged with multiple crimes including: driving with a suspended license, disobedience to a police officer, failure to exercise due care, driving without insurance, and failure to appear in Anderson County court on a drug charge earlier this summer. The passenger was charged with public intoxication, possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a weapon while intoxicated.
